Shared Note

Portrait of William and his wife Frances on the Ballingdon estate. ‎(Tate Gallery)‎ http://www.tate.org.uk/about/tatereport/2008/collection/highlights/thomas-gainsborough.htm. The estate was at Ballingdon-cum-Brundon, near Sudbury on the Suffolk-Essex border. Auberies, in Bulmer, where his daughter Mrs Andrewes, lived is in the adjoining parish.

William Carter seems to have been a mill owner manufacturing cloth. There is reference in commentaries on the picture of Mr and Mrs Andrewes that Mrs Andrewes ‎(France Carter, William's daughter)‎ was not wearing clothes made from cloth produced in her father's mill. There are also references to Carter joining with an inventor, Kay, in connection with the flying shuttle which speeded up cloth weaving.

In his will William left funeral details and asked to be “put in a lead coffin and privately burried in a deep grave in the chappel belonging to the parish churc of Bulmer without any pall bearers.”

WIlliam left extensive land holdings to his family. He had farms in Halstead, Essex ‎(75 Acres)‎, Gestingthorpe and Little Maplestead ‎(70 Acres)‎, Saxsted and ? with 20 acres of woodland, Little Yeldham, Great Yeldham and Bechamp Saint Paul, Little Conard and Great Conard ‎(formerly estate of Mrs Margrath and Mr Andrews)‎,Felixstowe, Hadley ‎(other places I can’t read)‎, house in Grave Church Street, London; Bulmer, Little Henny and Middleton besides his main property in Ballingdon.

possible records of batism:

1. Name William CARTER relationship son of Parents John & Mary Date 6 Mar 1697 Notes twins Parish Uggeshall
Amount paid £0.05 ‎(Family history on line)‎.

Also
Name George CARTER relationship son of Parents John & Mary Date 21 Apr 1710 Notes – Parish Uggeshall

and we know from his will that William had a brother George - so this is a very likely match. Unfortunately, could not also find a match for Mary Carter, his sister.
