Shared note

Sarah was born on 17th April 1860 and the name on her birth certificate is Burk. Alternative spellings are Burke/Birk and sometimes Birks. The birth was registered by Bridgett, her mother who signed with her mark. Illiteracy is a common reason for the variation in the spelling of family names.

I have been unable to identify the family in censuses before 1871.

On her marriage certificate Sarah gives her age as 19 but, from the birth certificate she would have been just short of 17. However, despite this discrepancy there is little doubt that this is the same Sarah. The marriage certificate names her fa ther as Michael a collier and subsequently her age on census returns matches the birth certificate date, so likely that she lied and added a couple of years to her age at time of marriage. According to the local registrar this was not uncommon. A t time of their marriage both she and Thomas Scalley were living in Marsh Street, Hanley.

Census records for 1881 and 1891 show Sarah living with husband Thomas Scally and family in the Hanley area of what is now Stoke on Trent.

By 1901 husband Thomas had died and Sarah was head of the household living at 3 Elm Street, Hanley. She still had a number of relatively young children living with her. Aged 40 Sarah is now earning her living as a Potter's cup maker. Daughter Mary , aged 20 is also a potter's cup maker and son Thomas 15, is a colliery horse driver below ground. Agnes 11, Bernard 10 and May 4 are also living with her. Elizabeth one of her older children has already married Job Cooper. I Have not followed thr ough with John who would be about 23, William about 18 or Ann about 13.

Other names in the family, provided by May Cooper, Sarah’s granddaughter, are: Kathleen, Francis/Frances, Agnes (Polly) and Mary. These last two are Elizabeth Scally's sisters (Sarah’s daughters). From 1881 census Sarah had three children John, El izabeth and Mary, she later had a further 5 by 1891 and a further child by 1901. Angnes was born in about 1890.

According to note from Daniel Cooper his maternal grandparents lived in Ashton, Manchester when he was a child. Daniel makes no reference to his grandfather having died and his grandmother remarried; it is possible that he did not realise as she r emarried before he was born.

However, another family account did mention that Sarah married a second time but they thought it was to Mr. Birks (coincidence that this is also her maiden name) and had at least one other child, Jim, who was a lot younger than the other childre n.

The records show that Sarah Scally, a widow aged 44, father Michael Burke married James Johnson a 35 year old coal miner on 4th December 1901 at the Stoke on Trent registry office and the certificate shows that she was still living at 3 Elm Stree t (as in 1901 census). So far I have found no documentary evidence to support the claim that they had a child, Jim, although if they did, typical naming conventions suggest that Jim/James would be a likely name.

The witnesses to the marriage were Edward and Mary Ellen Burke. This is Sarah’s brother and his wife. Edward Burke, son of Michael Burke married Mary Ellen Johnson, daughter of Elijah Johnson on 27 Sept 1891 at Wellington Church, Hanley, Staffords hire. It appears that Sarah married the brother of her sister in law. (The Burke siblings marrying the Johnson siblings).

According to the family she eventually moved back to Hanley and lived at 3 Milner Street until she was very old before moving into the Little Sisters Home where she died. The family say that "Grandma Birks" died on the day of Elizabeth's funeral . Again, no evidence found to substantiate this claim

Death: there are a number of possible deaths registered, including the most likely: a) entry for death of Sarah Johnson, aged 78, in Stoke on Trent, Q1 1941 v6b 469. This could fit with family story of died on day of her daughter Elizabeth's funeral. Sarah should have been 80, not 78 but a small discrepancy in age would not be un usual as family and firends reporting deaths frequently appear to be mistaken over age. b) entry for death of Sarah Johnson, aged 78, in Stoke on Trent, Q2 1941 v6b 325. This could also fit with family story of died on day of her daughter Elizabeth's funeral.
