Shared note

Sarah Maria was also known as Sallie. Her mother died while she was still young, about 5 years old, and the family account is that she was adopted by Aunt Ann Bailey, an embroideress, her mother's sister. It is unlikely to have been a formal, leg al adoption. In 1871 at the time of the census however, she is a 10 month baby still living with her parents in Norton.

1881 census: Sarah was living with her Aunt and Uncle, Ann (aged 48 born Ipstones) and Paul Bailey (aged 48, born Horton) at the Red Lion Inn, Cheddleton. Sarah gives her place of birth as Horton. Also living with them in 1881 were Sarah A Baile y (34, Horton), sister of Paul, Hannah Bailey, (14 born Cheddleton) neice of Paul and a servant Alison Jackson aged 17 from Cheddleton. RG11/2744/29 Page 17

The family account is that Sallie went on to keep public houses, first The Plough, at Wetley Rocks with her first husband Charles Thomas Sheldon whom she married in 1894. (He was also her first cousin) and then The Bowling Green, Cellerhead. The s tory is that she met her second husband, William Deakin when he came into the pub (which one?). It seems that when Charles knew he was dying he asked William to look after her.

At least some of this is born out by the 1901 census.

In 1901 Sarah M (29) and her husband Charles T Sheldon 32 , in-keeper, are at the Plough in Wetley Rocks. Charles is working on his own account. His birth place is given as Cheadle and that of his wife as Congleton. This place of birth is incorrec t but suggests that the Harvey family must have lived in Congleton for a while during her childhood or that it was where her father Samuel lived while she was a child and she had assumed it was where she was born. Their three young children are no t listed. (RG13/2629/36 page 9).

At the time of the 1901 Sarah and Charles’s two older children (Edith 6 and James 4, both born in Wetley Rocks) were staying with Paul (68) and Ann (67, born Ipstones) Bailey at Wetley Rocks. Paul is a master stone mason working on his own account , born Horton. Also living with them is May Tipper 18, identified as their adopted daughter. She was born in Leek. The children are described as visitors, so it is not clear whether they were there for only a short time. There was also Minnie Bee tlestone, 23 and assistant school teacher from Snedshill, Salop and she is described as a boarder. (RG13/2629/38 p14). Where is Ellen Sheldon, she would be no more than 2 years old?

Sarah Maria is said to have disapproved of her daughter, Elizabeth marrying a catholic and according to Elizabeth herself didn't go to the wedding but regretted it afterwards.

Sarah moved to 11 Edgerton Street, Hanley where she brought up her family. Her father Samuel came to live with her for the last years of his life.
